Subject: U.S. Robotic Sportster 14.4 Fax/Modems

Situation:
==========
You are having problems using WinFax PRO with a U.S. Robotic Sportster 14.4
Fax/Modem.

Solution:
=========
Practice has shown that there are two different, successful strategies to
set up WinFax PRO 4.0 properly with U.S. Robotic Sportster 14.4 fax/modems
when the default settings do not produce reliable fax transmissions.

The first setup method is outlined below in steps 1 through 7. If you are
still experiencing difficulties, proceed to the second setup method on the
next page.

In addition to the information here, please refer to the section in the
WinFax PRO 4.0 Setup Guide called "Configuring WinFax for Your System".

Setup Method 1
--------------
1. In WinFax PRO 4.0, from the Setup menu, select Fax/Modem. The
    Fax/Modem Setup dialog appears.

    - In the Model field, use the drop-down list box to select U.S.
      Robotics, Inc. -- Sportster 14400 Fax.

    - In the Init. field, change the initialization string that appears as
      follows:

	AT&F&C1&D2&H1&R2S7=55S36=0\

    - Click OK.

    - From the Fax menu, select Exit to exit WinFax.

2. Use a Windows text editor, such as Notepad or SYSEDIT, to look for the
    following entries and to make the necessary changes to your SYSTEM.INI
    file.

3. In the [Boot] section of the SYSTEM.INI, look for a line that says:

	COMM.DRV=

    - For Windows 3.1, the line should read: COMM.DRV=WFXCOMM.DRV

    - For Windows for Workgroups 3.11, the line should read:
      COMM.DRV=COMM.DRV

4. The following lines should be present in the [386 Enh] section of the
    SYSTEM.INI file. If these lines are present, make sure that the values
    match those listed below. If these lines are not present, they should
    be added.

	COMBOOSTTIME=30
	COMxFIFO=2
	COMxBUFFER=4096
	COMxTXSIZE=16
	COMxRXSIZE=8
	COMxPROTOCOL=XOFF
	COMxTXFIFO=1
	COMxRXTRIGGER=8

Note: Substitute the "x" references above with the number of the
      communications port where your modem is located.

5. Save the SYSTEM.INI file and exit the text editor.

6. From the File menu in Program Manager, select Exit to exit Windows.

7. Restart Windows. Upon re-starting Windows, the changes made above will
    take effect.

Setup Method 2
--------------
If fax performance is still not reliable, make the following additional
changes in WinFax PRO 4.0.

1. In WinFax PRO 4.0, from the Setup menu, select Fax/Modem. The
    Fax/Modem Setup dialog appears.

    - In the Model field, use the drop-down list box to select Generic
      Class 1 (Software Flow Control).

    - In the Init. field, change the initialization string that appears as
      follows:

	AT&F&C1&D2&H2&I2S7=55S36=0\

    - Click OK.

    - From the Fax menu, select Exit to exit WinFax.

2. Restart WinFax PRO 4.0 and test the fax.

The changes made to SYSTEM.INI are applicable to both setup methods.

Note: There are two versions of the U.S. Robotic Sportster 14.4 fax/modems
       that do not send the CNG tone (Calling Tone) to WinFax PRO 4.0.
       This causes automatic voice/fax switches to fail to detect an
       incoming fax. The following process will help you to determine if
       you have one of these modems.

1. Run the Windows Terminal program.

2. In the Terminal window, type ...

	ATI7

    ... and press Enter.

3. Part of the response will be a Supervisor Date for the firmware of the
    modem. The two U.S. Robotics Sportster 14.4 fax/modems that do not
    send the CNG tone have Supervisor Dates of 10/29/93 and 11/16/93.

4. In the Terminal window, type ...

	AT+FCLASS=1

    ... and press Enter.

5. Remove the telephone line from the modem and type ...

	ATX3D

    ... and press Enter. You should hear a half-second beeping noise every
    three seconds. If you do not, call U.S. Robotics at (708) 982-5151 and
    ask for a firmware update.
