Competition Training
System for Gliding

Foreword

This program has been developed for the training of competition and cross-country soaring pilots.

CTG (Competition and Training System for Gliding) is also a challenging game. You can have your own competitions at home.

The program is under constant development and up-dates are offered to registered owners.

We wish you pleasant soaring hours also on the ground.

IBM PC or 100% compatible, with a 386SX or a more powerful processor and
a mouse.

Windows:
Version 3.1 or later.

Memory:
4 megabytes minimum RAM.

Disk space:
3 megabytes free disc space.

Display:
Preferably SVGA (800 x 600 points), 256 colours. You can also use a VGA-display (640 x 480) with a slightly less accurate map.

When you start the program for the first time, it will request the resolution of your display. The options are VGA-resolution (640 x 480 points) or SVGA-resolution (800 x 600 points) Small Fonts. If, for one reason or another, you wish to alter the resolution at a later time, change the setting according to paragraph Settings of this Manual.

Important:

You have to add line "share" in to the autoexec.bat -file, if it does not exist already. The quickest way to do this is using the "Edit"-program the following way:
 1. Quit Windows.
 2. Write C:
 3. Write CD\
 4. Write EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT
 5. Using the arrow-keys, move the cursor approximately half way down the file.
 6. Write C:\DOS\SHARE, then press Enter
 7. Press the Alt-key and the F-key simultaneously.
 8. With the arrow-keys, move the cursor to "Save" and press Enter.
 9. Press Alt+F again (see 7. above).
10. Move the cursor to "Exit" and press Enter.
11. Wait for the cursor to return to the screen and press Ctrl, Alt and Del simultaneously (this restarts the computer with the new settings.

Starting the Program

a) Starting from Windows: double click the CTG-icon.

b) Starting from DOS: With the CD-command, change into the directory where you have the CTG-program and write CTG. The program will then first start Windows and the CTG automatically.

Basic Information

Menus

Edit

Restart
The task is abandoned and begun again with the settings chosen for the task. The Random Choice -task will not re define the strength of the thermals.

Cancel
Return to the beginning point of your last glide. If you have already chosen your gliding speed, you can cancel it with the Cancel-key. You can cancel a glide only once during a task. You can not cancel your first glide or your final glide.

Ballast

Choose the water ballast you want to carry. You can drain it during the flight. As you start a task, the default value is full tanks.

Tasks

You can choose the task, the conditions and the wind. More on the tasks later.

Conditions
You can choose from four default conditions or opt for random thermal strength. If you choose Changing Conditions, the program makes random decisions all the time. This mode is closest to real soaring.

Wind
On - The wind has an effect on your flight.
Off - The wind has no effect.

Random Wind
The program chooses wind direction and velocity at random.

Define
You can enter wind direction and velocity according to your taste.

Glider

You can choose between three classes:

	Standard: 15 m: Open:
	SZD-55-1 AS W 20 Nimbus 3
	DG-300 AS W 20C
	LS-4 Ventus C
	LS-7
	Discus

Information

The rules of the game as well as the polar curves of the gliders with different amounts of water ballast. The curve of your chosen glider will be displayed.

Settings

Select Settings to open a window where you can change the settings of the display and zero out the flight results.
Note If you want to change the definition of the display, you have to start the program again with the new settings.

Quit

Select Quit to exit from the program.

On-Screen Texts

Time
The elapsed flying time

Distance
The distance you have flown

Height
Your present height above ground

Pilot
The name of the pilot

GLI% and CLI%
The ratio of the time used for gliding and climbing

Average Speed
Continuous average speed display, not absolutely accurate

Glider

Conditions
The conditions on the present task

Other
The headline shows you the number, name and length of the present task.

In a box on either side of the bottom of the screen you can see the thermal strengths and the corresponding colours.

The Wind -box shows you the direction and velocity of the wind if the wind is effective.

In the lower left hand corner you find the scale of the map.

Playing the Game

Point the thermal you want to use first with the mouse and click the left button. While you are entering the first thermal the program asks for your name. The program asks for the speed you want to use in the glide.
Note! All speeds that the program handles are ground speeds.

Next the program asks how high you want to climb. If you choose to climb over 2000 metres, the strength of the lift will be halved above 2000 metres. You can not climb higher than 2500 metres. Pressing the Through -key will take you right trough the lift. Doing so you will gain height 30 times the thermal strength in metres. Pressing the 2000 key gets you to 2000 metres right away.

You can measure the distance to the next thermal, for example, by moving the pointer to the desired location and clicking the right button of your mouse. When you measure the final glide, the program also tells you the maximum speed that takes you to the goal.

The turnpoints are marked with triangles. Turnpoint pictures are taken by moving the pointer into the triangle and clicking the left button of the mouse. You will then hear a sound signal.

All turnpoints must be rounded in the numbered order (except in the POST-task, which will be explained later). The turnpoint number is marked with red on a green dot next to the turnpoint.

The minimum height is 50 metres. You can fly lower only in the final glide.

The air around the thermals is sinking. The sink equals the weakest lift of the chosen conditions.

The start gate and the finish line are represented by a white line on Ryskl.

Some Hints and Tips

Before starting the game, think about the task you are going to fly and observe the conditions etc. Usually it pays to climb only in the strongest thermals and fly through all the weaker ones enroute.

When the program asks for height or speed it is handiest to use the so-called short-cut keys as follows:

		OK alt+O
		Cancel	alt+C
		2000M	alt+M
		Through	alt+T

Tasks

1.	Ryskl-Koski West-Lauttakyl-Padasjoki-Vesivehmaa Ryskl (382 km)

2.	Ryskl-Lammi-Punkalaiden-Ryskl (235km)

3.	Ryskl-Somero-Lauttakyl-Vesala-Alvettula-Ryskl (375 km)

4.	Ryskl-Humppila-Alvettula-Vesivehmaa-Ryskl (276 km)

5. Ryskl-Kiikala-Lauttakyl-Padasjoki-Hyvink-Ryskl (403 km)

6.	Ryskl-Padasjoki-Ryskl (181 km)

7.	Ryskl-Vammala-Orimattila-Ryskl (353 km),
a dry thermal task, see Special Tasks

8.	Ryskl-Vammala-Orimattila-Ryskl (353 km)

9.	POST 5h, see Special Tasks

Special Tasks

Nearly all tasks are more or less similar, but two special ones are included. They are something different.

Task Number 7.
Ryskl-Vammala-Orimattila-Ryskl is a so-called dry thermal -task. You have to find the lift by yourself. A white dot gives you a little hint on the location of lift, but it may be in another section of the task than you.

Task Number 9.
The rules of this task are not the same as on an official POST -tasks. There are six (6) turnpoints. You can turn them in any sequence, but you cannot use the same turnpoint twice before using two other turnpoints.

The results of this task are not registered according to average speeds but according to points. You get points for both distance and average speed. The distance is measured from point to point from the start line and through the turnpoints to the goal.

Trouble Shooting

The map is only partly displayed

You have entered the SVGA -display setting although your display has a VGA -resolution, or you are using the SVGA driver in Large Fonts -mode.

Correction:
a) Switch into VGA settings,
or
b) Switch the SVGA -display driver into Small Fonts -mode (see the Windows manual).

The map is shown in a small size

Correction:
Switch into SVGA -settings.

b) Your display has a higher resolution than SVGA.
Correction:
Switch to SVGA (800 x 600) Small Fonts -display mode (see the Windows manual).

Out of Memory -Error Message

You do not have enough available memory to run the program.
Correction:
Close all unnecessary programs. If this does not help, you have to get more RAM for your computer. (For more information see the Windows manual.)

Sharing Violation -Error Message

You have not added the line C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE into the autoexec.bat -file. See paragraph "Settings" of this manual.

The program does not print with the default printer

Correction:
See the Windows manual for information on printing problems.
